Wendy Gervais is an Edmonton, Alberta artist creating a variety of visual art forms, connecting images with ideas of memory.

Images and metaphors of memories are manifested in contemporary art. It interests me how artists establish and define their past in their art. I believe that artists continuously and consistently create artwork that is entwined with memory recollection; that artists frequently evaluate and re-evaluate their emotions by revisiting memories while they create their art. Thus the art making process and the subsequent emotional activity remain a conundrum.

Houses/Homes is a group of charcoal/chalk drawings representing my response to the transformational changes in my neighbourhood as older homes disappear in the Garneau area where I have lived for over 25 years.

Aerial Urban Landscapes evolves from my interest in the distortion of shapes as seen from a height, such as the perspective from roofs of city buildings. I explore this theme by deconstructing my own original drawings, paintings, and prints and purposely obscuring previous images. The newly formed pieces are then layered with photos, magazine images, as well as found man-made and natural objects. I further accentuate the illusion of distorted vistas by incorporating handwritten, typed and stenciled text, and by drawing with charcoal, chalk, oil pastels, and India ink.

River Structures is comprised of small collages or studies and a group of large works on paper. River Structures is based on the meditative effects of natural bodies of water, in particular the North Saskatchewan River, Alberta; Lake Superior, Ontario; and the St. John River, New Brunswick - all waterways with which I am familiar.
