Houses/Homes

Houses/Homes is a group of charcoal/chalk drawings representing my response to the transformational changes in my neighbourhood as older homes disappear in the Garneau area where I have lived for over 25 years.

One day I was dismayed to discover that the house I had been drawing the day before had been demolished overnight. Nothing remained. I realized this house, which had been a home to families for decades in old Garneau, was suddenly gone without a trace of the families who had lived within its walls.

My artwork is a response to this loss. Although my drawings are not intended as an historical record, my series illuminates an important chapter of the history of both Garneau and the City of Edmonton. With this series of drawings my aim is to invoke an ambiance of the present and an intrigue of the past of the Garneau neighbourhood, which recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary.
