River Structure and Road Trip
I travel in the summer months across Canada to photograph, sketch and write about my experience. These journeys inspired two series: River Structures and Road Trip.
River Structures is a series of mixed media visual art works comprised of small collages or studies and a group of large works on paper exploring the meditative effects of natural bodies of water and shores I visit when driving across Canada: the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta, Lake Superior in Ontario, and the St. John River, the heart of the province of New Brunswick.
During these 8000 km round trip journeys, I collect and record my ideas and memories for subsequent imagery, and gather found natural and man-made objects. These objects, such as sticks and bits of car-crushed metal and labels and packaging from in-car picnics, are tangible items I reflect on during the winter months, transporting me back to those places and times. My reflections and these items and notes provide the building blocks for my series Road Trip.
